Enteral feeding is required when a patient has a functioning gastrointestinal (GI) tract but cannot get enough nutrients by mouth and becomes at risk for malnutrition. A number of diseases and medical conditions, and sometimes their treatment, can lead to inadequate nutrition and the need for enteral feeding. Among them are GI disease, cancer and its treatment, neurological disease, and failure to thrive.

The use of home feeding tubes is increasing worldwide. It is estimated that more than 300,000 adults and children in the US are receiving enteral nutrition at home.  Many times, tube feeding is used for a short time; however, there are instances where enteral feeding is required long-term.

Misconnection of tubing used to link patients to medical devices or medical devices to each other is an underreported problem, which has the potential to result in serious injury or death.  For example, a feeding administration set being connected to a tracheostomy tube. To help ease patient concern and improve patient safety, a new feeding tube connection standard called ENFit was implemented industry-wide to minimize the occurrence of medical device tubing misconnections. The new ENFit connector will NOT allow accidental connection between enteral and non-enteral devices.

In addition to connection concerns, many patients struggle with comfort and mobility when it comes to enteral feeding. Traditional PEG feeding tubes can be bulky and hard to conceal. The Halyard Health MIC-KEY* Low Profile feeding tubes are synonymous with an active lifestyle. They sit skin level making them very easy to conceal. There is no tubing outside the stomach making them less prone to snagging allowing patients to move freely and gain back mobility.

Having a feeding tube means learning new skills and adapting to new routines, but it doesn’t mean patients need to stop enjoying the physical activities they love. Together with ENFit, Halyard Health provides a safe, simple and stress-free solution for thousands who benefit from their MIC-KEY* tube feeding products.
